Blogging the Culinary Everyday

cooking baking eggs flour

So unless you've been living under a rock in the last 6 weeks you'll know that as a country we have been in lockdown because of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

My patience is getting thinner, my waist line is getting bigger and I'm feeling down in the dumps. The only things I have found that gets me out of this slump is cooking. This is something that my 8 year old daughter, Miss L, is finding too. It breaks up the day and you get to eat wonderful things you've made (hence the growing waist line). We've had to have been resourceful with our ingredients, though, not knowing what we're going to be able to get hold of. It's been a culinary mystery tour!

The enormity of the situation is overwhelming, but with cooking we feel like we have some control.

But then again, maybe this is exactly the right time to learn some new skills and develop ourselves. There are so many skills that are going to be learnt with this blogging venture, for me a Miss L. That's why this blog is called Cook Bake Teach. Firstly, for her, she'll be learning to cook and bake. A vital skill as we all know. But it won't just be Miss L that will be taught new skills. I'll be improving my writing and photography skills (I hope!) and as we do this together we'll also be able to have a sense of accomplishment. Lots of benefits.

The downside.....the obvious waist line issue! But we'll just have to deal with that when the lockdown is lifted and things go back to normal!

It's exciting starting something new, and hopefully this blog will be able to have a real community feel with lots of guest contributors in this strange and alien time. Ultimately it's a time to come together.

So follow along with us as we delve into the great culinary unknown! There'll be #baking, #cooking, both savoury and sweet. Kid friendly #recipes that you can join in and give a go, and maybe even the odd #vlog for your entertainment.

Thanks for reading!

Australian Pikelets

This is my go-to recipe for a different and tasty breakfast for the kids. Obviously we don't do it often because it's not as quick and easy as toast, but they love them, and they make a great snack too. This is an Australian recipe. I used to live in Australia when I was a kid, and remember pikelets fondly. So when I had kids of my own, I dug out the recipe and started making them. They are light and fluffy, and very easy to make. Obviously if kids are involved though they need to be careful over the hot frying pan. This is an Australian recipe. Miss L's Mushroom Omelette

Today for lunch Miss L decided to make herself a mushroom omelette. I was surprised because she's not a huge fan of egg, but I thought...great! Less work for me! As it's the first thing a chef learns at cookery school though, I thought I'd put it on the blog. It's a great start to a culinary career, and as Miss L wants to be a chef, I guess it's a given that she knows how to make at omelette. I kid you not though, it was the best omelette I'd had in a long time!! I don't know what she did....but it tasted so much better than mine! :D I love an omelette, and I always consider it as a bit of comfort food for lunch. It's so much more homely than a sandwich! During lockdown we've been keeping a lot of eggs in the house too, for baking and whatnot, so it's always a good way to use them up. The way I taught her, is probably the cheating way to do it, because I shove it under the grill to do the top, instead of it being on the stove for too long and goi...
